Your other option would be to go with a 4K monitor. I've not experienced less sharp screen when running at 1440p (hidpi thing), so maybe the others are mentioning the lack of bandwidth and the monitor being forced to run at a lower resolution or a slower refresh rate. I use USB-C to HDMI and also HDMI to HDMI (via a USB-C Anker hub). With the comments about cables and other stuff, I think it's nonsense. Cannot remember if it fixed the temperature issues or not but at least I got a sharper looking monitor now. There are other ways to use hidpi but this is the one that worked for me. I stumbled across it when I was trying to fix the temperature and fan issues with the 16-inch MBP when it's connected to external monitors. There's a workaround where you have to force MacOS to render the resolution to 5K or something and then have it do the scalings to make it look like it's retina. I have three 27GL850 monitors and they're 1440p at 27-inches. I found a fix and it actually made a difference.
